Tap – Developing fine motor skills learning rhythm and tempo from basic to advanced steps. 

Hip Hop – A fast paced upbeat atmosphere along with age appropriate high-energy street movements  ranging from old school to new school hip hop. 

Ballet – Concentrating on technique, strength, posture, rhythm and musicality. 

Jazz – Consists of floor stretches, leaps, turns and dance combinations. While working on placement and technique, ballet is encouraged as it does help with core movement.

Contemporary – A genre that allows one to create a unique style. Pulled from modern and ballet but more of a free flowing form of dance with elements of modern, jazz, ballet and lyrical.

Acro – Combines classical dance techniques with precision acrobatic elements. It is defined by its athletic style, its unique choreography, which seamlessly blends dance and acrobatics

Age is nothing but, a number!


There are many benefits to dancing physically, emotionally and mentally. Whether your 82 or age 2, dancing not only changes but, challenges you. A study showed that music engages certain areas of the brain such as; paying attention, making predictions, and recovering memories. Music is said to boost our physical performance, as for some it is hard to resist tapping our toes to a catchy beat.

  1. Improving Balance & Strength; Studies have shown that dancers with years of physical training have trained their nervous systems to coordinate with their muscles. The nervous system is made up of the spinal cord, brain and nerves. Overtime as you train the nervous system to coordinate with your muscles, you maintain better balancing behaviors.
  2. Mood Booster; Helping improve your mental and emotional stress. Dance allows for the body to react to the music and let loose. By letting loose we are allowing our minds to escape, reducing stress, anxiety and depression. Boosting ones self-esteem.
  3. Cognitive Skills; Researchers have found that areas of the brain that control memory and skills, such as planning and organizing improve with dancing. Unlike other forms of exercise, dance has the benefit of improving balance through rhythm and music. Dance provides a safe gateway for children to learn and explore, such as socializing and problem solving with others at a young age. Dancing gives children the opportunity to speak another language, the language of movement.
  4. Self-Confidence & Self-Esteem; Dancing brings out the spiritual bond between the body and mind, allowing one to see their potential and abilities through an artistic experience. Starting at a young age allows children to feel the sense of accomplishment and acceptance early on, providing years for growth. Enhancing creativity, imagination and performance skills.
  5. Consistency is Key; Dance will show students in front of their eyes, that observing their actions, listening to guidance from a teacher, and working hard, lead to positive results. Students are dancing in front of a mirror observing their own actions. Working hard each week to succeed, never giving up. Black Cultures Influence on Dance History

Have you ever wondered where the dance moves you see in music videos originated from? Throughout centuries, African American culture has continued to influence other art cultures such as, music, theatre, and literature. African Americans brought forth many cultural traditions including (but, not limited too) dance, to the North, South, and Central Americas as well as the Caribbean Islands, as early as the 1500’s.

Africans danced on many occasions; births, marriages and even during daily activities. Enslaved Africans that came to the Americas, continued to dance not only for their slave owners as entertainment but, as a way to stay connected to their homeland roots. These dances became more dominant through the 18th century, such styles; the ring shout, the calenda, the chica and the juba. Master Juba, creator of the juba, one of the first black performers to perform onstage for a white audience.


In 1891 The Creole Show was created combing both blacks and whites onstage to perform. This show introduced many new dances influenced by African American culture such as, the cakewalk, the charleston, the lindy hop, the jitterbug, and the twist. Early 1920s and 30s African-influenced shuffle dances, Irish jig, and English clog dancing combined, creating an element of which we know today as tap dancing. Black tap influencer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson introduced tap dancing to whites in early 1930s. Tap dancing took off in the 1930s and 40s when whites started to add this genre of dance to their motion pictures. At this time blacks started to study genres such as ballet and modern dance. Leading white choreographers integrated dance moves influenced by African Americans into their dances and hired black dancers to perform these movement styles.

Dance created and performed by African Americans has become a permanent part of American dance history. The definition of dance has expanded including, jazz, contemporary, break dancing and hip-hop. Throughout the decades many black performers became famous in the dance world. Dancers from Misty Copeland, Alvin Ailey, Katherine Dunham, Janet Collins, Pearl Primus, Debbie Allen, Savion Glover, Rhapsody James, Fatima Robinson to LaurieAnn Gibson. Don’t recognize any of these names, I suggest looking them up. These are just some of the names part of Black History that have transformed the dance world. Next time your out dancing or in class, that twist was created 500+ years ago in villages.

Class Genres

Get Up & Dance! Parent & Child Class Sitting/Crawling – 8 years; 30 minute class for children to stimulate coordination skills, listening skills, balance, music interpretation, creative movement and motor development.

Tiny Tots Ages 2 – 3 ; Teaching basic body movement and physical communication. To help children with personal discipline, physical control, group cooperation, problem solving and to expand their love for dance.
